Video frame to JPG or PNG: which should you use?
Use JPG for photos you will share or post: files are small and look great at 90–100% quality. Use PNG when you will edit the image further, or when the frame contains text or graphics, such as a screen recording, because PNG is lossless.
JPG vs PNG at a glance
| JPG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (adjustable quality) | Lossless |
| File size | Small | Several times larger |
| Best for | Camera footage, sharing, social media | Screen recordings, text, graphics, further editing |
| Re-saving | Loses a little quality each time | No loss |

Why the choice matters for video frames
A video frame has already been compressed once by the video codec. Saving it as JPG compresses it a second time. At high quality settings (90–100%) the difference is very hard to see in natural footage like people, pets and landscapes. Lower settings can introduce visible blockiness, especially around edges.
Screen recordings are different: sharp text, thin lines and flat colours are exactly where JPG artefacts show up. PNG keeps them crisp.
Which quality setting for JPG?
- 95% (Frame Capture's default): near-indistinguishable from PNG for camera footage.
- 100%: largest JPG; use when you want maximum fidelity but still need JPG.
- 70–85%: smaller files for quick sharing; fine on small screens.
How to save a video frame as JPG or PNG on Android
- Open the video in Frame Capture and step to the frame you want.
- Tap the save button to open the save sheet.
- Under Format, choose JPG or PNG. For JPG, set the quality slider.
- Choose the resolution, then tap Save to Gallery.
You can set your preferred default format and JPEG quality in Settings so you don't have to choose every time.

Common mistakes
- Saving a screen recording still as low-quality JPG, which blurs text.
- Editing and re-saving the same JPG many times.
- Choosing PNG for everything, then running out of storage or hitting upload size limits.
In Frame Capture's free version, JPG saves are free; PNG can be unlocked for a single save by watching a short ad, or always with Premium.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a video to JPG images on my phone?
Yes. A frame extractor app saves individual frames as JPG images. To convert a section of a video into many images, use an interval or range export. Learn how to extract multiple frames →
Is PNG bigger than JPG?
Yes, usually several times bigger for photographic content, because PNG compresses without discarding any information.
Which format is best for Instagram or WhatsApp?
JPG. Both services recompress uploads anyway, so a high-quality JPG gives the same visible result as PNG with a much smaller file.
